All SLJ students experience a series of regular college readiness lessons and activities in Advisory as well as opportunities to meet one-on-one and in small groups with our team of College & Career advisors.
These advisors get to know students personally and help them identify and enact the most rigorous post-high school plan possible.
Our College & Career team undertakes to:
instill the belief in our students that attending college is the norm and the expectation;
coach students' families throughout the college application/preparation process so that they are both aware of and involved in every step;
facilitate the college application process such that any obstacles on the path to matriculation are minimized to the greatest possible degree;
provide enrichment opportunities to supplement classroom learning, to prepare students academically and socially for the college experience, curtail summer melt, and provide skills such as critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and self-advocacy;
support alumni in their efforts to persist in and complete their undergraduate degree.
SLJ’s current College & Career programs
Pre-College Opportunities – Study abroad, residential college programs, arts & culture, STEM, paid internships, leadership development.
College Access Program – SAT prep, mandatory college prep workshops during summer before senior year, individualized application and financial aid support, essay-writing workshops, parents’ nights and individual counseling, financial literacy curriculum, college transition counseling.
College Campus Visits – Visits for each grade to local colleges to meet with admissions officers, and learn about the application process; juniors apply to attend a five-college overnight trip.
Career Prep – Lunch With Lawyers monthly speaker series, resume and networking workshops, career days, post-college transition counseling and support for non-college bound students.
