The Adams Street Foundation (ASF) has served as the embedded nonprofit partner of the Urban Assembly School for Law & Justice (SLJ) since 2008. SLJ is a Title I public high school based in downtown Brooklyn serving over 400 students annually from all five boroughs. ASF provides students with high-quality, broad-based enrichment programs and support services so they not only graduate high school but attend and succeed in college. Core programming includes individualized counseling, college and financial aid application support, test prep, internships, study abroad programs, college tours, extracurricular clubs, and the financial backing to make it all accessible regardless of income.

Access is everything: more than 75% of students are first-generation college applicants and attendees and the majority come from New York City's most under-resourced communities, including Flatbush, East New York, and Brownsville. Our staff work daily with every student individually from ninth grade through graduation, forming deep relationships based on trust and understanding of each student’s interests and needs.

These outcomes are the product of sustained, individualized investment. 100% of graduating seniors in the Class of 2026 and 2025 were admitted to college or secured post-secondary plans. SLJ graduates are not only getting into college, they’re also staying in: the latest persistence data shows an 87% 18-month college retention rate. These extraordinary results are achievable because ASF staff know every student by name, transcript, aspirations, and family situation.
