summer involvement

What Are You Going to Do This Summer?

As early as January, SLJ students begin to hear this question, from their teachers, their classmates, and themselves. The options are plentiful, and the tireless staff of the SLJ program office works to connect students with meaningful summer experiences that suit their passion and provide the level of challenge they want and need.

Pre-College Programs

What better way to prepare for college than to go to college? SLJ students have participated in summer residential programs at Princeton University, Yale University, Columbia University, Union College, the University of Virginia, and other prestigious institutions, where they have taken college-level classes, lived in dorms, and connected with professors and fellow students.

Annually our students head to campus to participate in the following prestigious programs:

  • Junior Statesmen of America at Princeton University & Yale University
  • Camp College at Union College
  • Youth About Business at Columbia University
  • Presidential Classroom at the University of Virginia
  • Summer Search at various campuses
  • Yale Exploration

Summer Internships

SLJ students know that it’s never too early to learn how to successfully navigate a professional environment, to acquire new skills in an office setting, to network with important people, and to build up the old college resume. And academics, while essential, are only a part of the well-rounded high school education, which should include extracurricular involvement, volunteering, and pre-professional experiences.

Every summer SLJ students have been placed in competitive internships at:

  • Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP
  • US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York
  • Vera Institute of Justice
  • Red Hook Community Justice Center
  • New York City Teaching Fellows
