SLJ Student Council Mission

The SLJ Student Council has a mission to enhance the school community by fulfilling two important functions:

  1. Student Advocacy: The SLJ Student Council represents each advisory and each grade, and has the responsibility and the power to advise the school on policy that affects students. This advisory capacity includes gathering opinions from students, discussing student issues in council meetings, and meeting with the principal and other school policy makers on a consistent basis. The Student Council does not have power to set policy in the school, but they do have power to lobby and influence decision makers on school policies.
  2. Student Affairs: The SLJ Student Council has the power to design and implement school events for the social, cultural, educational, and athletic enrichment of the entire student body. In addition, the Student Council is charged with raising awareness about important issues facing our community. Possible events include, but are not limited to, fundraisers, dances, basketball challenges, bake sales, trips, and luncheons.

Student Council Members

There are two types of members of the SLJ Student Council: Officers and Advisory Representatives. Officers are elected every June, and Advisory Representatives are elected each September. Each has a different set of responsibilities:

Student Council Officers

  1. President: The President has the responsibility to preside over both Officer Meetings and Full Council meetings. The President is responsible for the successful operation of the Student Council.
  2. Vice-President: The Vice-President has the responsibility of supporting the President. If the President is ever absent from a meeting, the Vice-President presides over the Council in her or his place.
  3. Student Body Advocate: The Student Body Advocate is responsible for advocating for the student body by promoting an agenda that improves the quality of student experiences at SLJ.
  4. Spirit Rep: The Spirit Rep is responsible for promoting school spirit at SLJ.
  5. Social Activist: The Social Activist is responsible for promoting social justice within the Council and the School.

Advisory Representatives

Each Advisory will elect one Advisory Representative who is a member of the SLJ Student Council. The responsibilities of an advisory representative are to: 1) represent the interests of the advisory at all Full Council meetings, and 2) assist in carrying out the functions and agenda of the Student Council.
