The SLJ Student Council has a mission to enhance the school community by fulfilling two important functions:
Student Advocacy: The SLJ Student Council represents each advisory and each grade, and has the responsibility and the power to advise the school on policy that affects students. This advisory capacity includes gathering opinions from students, discussing student issues in council meetings, and meeting with the principal and other school policy makers on a consistent basis. The Student Council does not have power to set policy in the school, but they do have power to lobby and influence decision makers on school policies. There are two types of members of the SLJ Student Council: Officers and Advisory Representatives. Officers are elected every June, and Advisory Representatives are elected each September. Each has a different set of responsibilities:
Each Advisory will elect one Advisory Representative who is a member of the SLJ Student Council. The responsibilities of an advisory representative are to: 1) represent the interests of the advisory at all Full Council meetings, and 2) assist in carrying out the functions and agenda of the Student Council.
