SLJ In the New York Times

Dear Friends,

In the June 30 edition of the New York Times, Jennifer Medina shares a smart and compassionate portrait of SLJ, nicknamed "the little school that could" by her colleague, Elissa Gootman, three years ago in an equally sincere look at our small but indefatigable community.

Ms. Medina hits upon several familiar themes, foremost the question of how the work we do at SLJ is to be sustained. It will not be easy. SLJ's development office looks forward to involving you in the continuing effort. Come September, you will learn about new and creative ways to lend a hand.

But for the moment, the 93% graduation rate reported in today's Times is very real, and very much a testament to what, at SLJ's first graduation on Thursday night, Principal Elana Karopkin called "not the village, but the continent" that has already thrown its love and support behind our fledgling school.

More than it worries for the future, today's article celebrates the present, and I can think of no better way to conclude our fourth school year than to share this story with you and thank you for bringing us to this place.

I, like Ms. Medina, marvel at the partners and allies who have rallied around SLJ; and, like Ms. Medina, have little doubt that, with all of you in our corner, and some new friends on the continent, we will see our mission through.

Wishing you a safe and peaceful summer,

Joe
